Sustainable & Reclaimed Wood
Reclaimed wood is wood that is salvaged from existing structures and repurposed for subsequent use in new or renovated buildings. Reclaimed wood is a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to using virgin wood. Additionally,
Reclaimed wood is salvaged from a variety of sources, including:
- Shipping and crating materials
- Deconstructed buildings: old houses, barns, warehouses, factories
- Antique water tanks, storage tanks from wineries and breweries
- Old gym bleachers
- Old deconstructed boats
- Railroad ties and old fences
Salvaged wood may also refer to wood that hasn’t been used before, but has been harvested from trees that have died due to natural causes, such as fire kill, or fallen trees retrieved from rivers or lakes.
Restoration of reclaimed wood varies with the particular wood and the subsequent use. Some woods are left with as much of their original surface as possible, including old paint from barns or the effects of weather. Others may be more processed: resawn, planed, and kiln dried to stabilize and standardize the wood.
Reclaimed wood has many uses, from furniture to flooring and siding as well as structural components such as beams.
Cudahy Lumber is an FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) Certified company, offering a range of sustainable wood and lumber products. Sustainable wood comes from sustainably managed forests. These are a renewable resource and are managed to prevent damage to eco-systems, watersheds, and other forest values.
What is FSC® and How Does It Ensure Sustainability?
The FSC® is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established in 1993 as a response to global deforestation. The Forest Stewardship Council® has changed the dialogue about and the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. FSC® sets forth principles, criteria, and standards that span economic, social, and environmental concerns. The FSC® standards represent the world’s strongest system for guiding forest management toward sustainable outcomes.
FSC®’s chain of custody system (CoC) tracks FSC® certified material through the production process – from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing
